Adhesive force refers to the viscous force between protective film base film and 

glue.

Adhesion refers to the peel strength after the film is applied. 

Cohesion refers to the cohesive force of glue itself.

By knowing the meanings of these forces, we can understand the performance 

of protective film better, in order to give full play to different kinds of protective 

films.

1, Adhesive force

It refers to the viscous force between glue and thin film. If adhesion is stronger 

than adhesive force, when the film is peeled off, the linkages between glue and 

thin film will break so residue is caused.

2, Adhesion

It refers to the force that is required to peel the protective film off the surfaces 

after the film has been applied for a while. Adhesion relates to the protected 

material, applying pressure, applying time, angles during peeling off and 

temperature. Normally with the increase of time and pressure, the adhesion 

will also increase. The adhesion of protective film can not increase too much in 

order to make sure that no residue is left after removal. Normally the adhesion 

is tested by peeling the film at the angel of 180 degree.

3, Cohesion

If refers to the internal strength of glue. As the glue specified for protective film, 

the cohesion must be very high. Otherwise, the internal cracking of glue during 

removal of protective film will cause residue. The method to measure the 

cohesion: apply the protective film on the stainless steel surface, hang a certain 

weight on the protective film, then test how much time it requires for the weight 

to pull off the protective film. If adhesion is stronger than cohesion, the linkages 

among glue molecules will break while peeling off the film, so residue is caused.
